Mike Tyson's 4-year-old daughter has died, Usmagazine.com has confirmed.

"I was just advised by investigators that Exodus Tyson was pronounced deceased at 11:45 a.m. today at the hospital," a rep for the Phoenix Police Department told Us in a statement Tuesday. "Our sympathies go out to the family."

The boxer's daughter was on life support and in critical condition after being found by her 7-year-old brother hanging from a treadmill cord, according to FOX News, which first reported the story.

Exodus was playing near the exercise equipment while her mother was cleaning in a separate room at 10:30 Monday morning. The mom sent the brother to look for her. After finding her in distress, he alerted his mother, who found Exodus on a treadmill with what has been described as a cable around her neck, according to police, who call it a "tragic accident."

She immediately took the cable off her daughter, called 911 and began performing CPR. Exodus was taken to St. Joe's Hospital.

Tyson, 42, flew into Arizona from Las Vegas after hearing of the incident. He was seen entering the hospital Tuesday morning.

There will be plenty written in the next few weeks about Bing – the re-named, re-developed Microsoft search engine that Redmond hopes might, just, finally, allow it to grab back some of Google’s market share and web advertising clout.

Maybe it will, maybe it won’t, but at the end of the day, it’s just a search engine. SO last phase of the internet.

The irony is that while Microsoft is effectively proving to the world that it is playing catch-up – even if there may be a few technological innovations in Bing – Google, meanwhile, is presenting a convincing vision of the next big thing on the web.

Two big announcements from this week’s Google Developer Conference show that the company appears to be well ahead of Microsoft in its thinking.

First, Google demonstrated how it plans to use HTML 5 – the new version of the ubiquitous web development language that is aimed at allowing the creation of browser-based applications that rival operating-system based software for functionality and usability.

As the web becomes the way that consumers and business use technology, so it makes sense to develop your applications for a browser rather than a complex, hardware-bound environment like, ooh, Windows for example.

Next comes Google Wave, a tool that has been created to answer the question: “What would email look like if we set out to invent it today?" according to Google software engineering manager Lars Rasmussen.

If you want more technical details, I will happily defer to the excellent Tim O’Reilly in his blog entry here, but in essence Google Wave is about redesigning our everyday communication and collaboration tools, such as email and instant messaging, for a future in the cloud.

Wave allows developers to build applications for real-time collaboration and interaction. It claims to try to mimic the way we interact face to face. And it brings together every major internet and technology trend, from cloud to social media to wikis to email and more, into a coherent, managed, human-oriented concept.

Let’s face it, at no time in the history of IT has software been developed with the way people naturally interact in mind – we have had to learn the ways to interact with software based upon the technological constraints of the time.

I can’t honestly say I’ve been excited about the emergence of a new search engine, and particularly a new search brand, at any time in my IT career.

But the vision that Google is this week presenting of a new model of software applications oriented around the web and around real-time real life, is the first time I’ve been vaguely excited by a new technology for a while.

It’s also a vision that doesn’t need PCs or bloated operating systems, doesn’t need hefty software development environments, and bypasses the need for complex PC-based applications. In short, a vision that doesn’t need what Microsoft has been so good at for the past 30 years.

Microsoft is going Bing, but if it doesn’t open its eyes it might one day soon be going bang.

NANOTECHNOLOGY "DNA" 3-D construction technique creates a wealth of structures

USING DNA as a basic chemical building block rather than a genetic molecule, scientists have devised a method for creating complex three-dimensional nanostructures with precisely controlled dimensions that range from 10 to 100 nm (Nature 2009, 459, 414). The strategy of self-assembly could provide a general route for manufacturing sophisticated devices with nanoscale features, the researchers say.

The technique, developed by William M. Shih of Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and colleagues, is an extension of DNA origami, in which hundreds of short oligonucleotides fasten to a long single strand of DNA in such a way that it folds into a predetermined shape (C&EN, March 20, 2006, page 10). Researchers have already used the technique to create 2-D snowflakes and smiley faces, as well as a 3-D DNA box (C&EN, May 11, page 30). Shih's strategy allows nanotechnologists to build a vast diversity of 3-D DNA structures, a capability his group demonstrated by constructing a tiny railed bridge, a genie bottle, and an icosahedron.

Shih's team designs the structures by computationally "carving" them out of a honeycomb lattice made of a DNA double helix. Using computer-aided design, they arrange a single strand of DNA so that it winds around that carved structure and then determine what short oligonucleotides are required to hold it in place.

"The challenge was actually getting it to work," Shih tells C&EN, because DNA is negatively charged, and repulsive forces tend to keep it from packing into the compact sculptures. "We didn't know what kind of tricks we would need to get it to fold correctly," he says. Ultimately, patience proved to be one of the tricks. Although most 2-D DNA origami structures fold within an hour, Shih's 3-D sculptures take about a week to fold.

"This successful move into three dimensions heralds a new era for the field of structural DNA technology," writes Duke University chemistry professor Thomas H. LaBean in a commentary that accompanies the paper. "Through the ages, some of the most iconic and lasting artifacts of human ingenuity have been sculptures and carvings, created from a wide variety of materials. But until now, a general purpose material from which nanometer-scale, three-dimensional shapes could be made has been lacking."


Vanderbilt awaits NCAA Selections "Baseball"

After a horrid series against rival Tennessee a week ago, many doubted Vanderbilt's chances at even getting an NCAA baseball bid. However a fine, vindicating performance in the SEC tournament has changed all that. The Commodores can rest assured that they will be among the field of 64 that will be announced on Monday at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN.

NCAA regional hosts were already announced earlier on Sunday and include North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisiana State, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma, Rice, East Carolina, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton,Louisville, Texas Christian, Arizona State. Most of the regional hosts will be No. 1 seeds.

Geographically it would make sense for Vanderbilt to go to the Louisville, Clemson or Georgia Tech regional. However, as we've seen in the past in a variety of sports Vanderbilt often gets sent far away from Nashville. Last year the Commodores made a trip to Tempe, Ariz. but in 2007 Vanderbilt hosted their first ever regional.

Baseball America analyst Aaron Fitt projects Vanderbilt to be a No. 2 seed in the Louisville regional LINK. He projects Western Kentucky (#2) and Indiana (#4) to also play in that regional. Vanderbilt defeated Louisville, 4-3, in a road game on April 22 in 10 innings.

Vanderbilt has an all-time record of 12-13 in the NCAA tournament. Vanderbilt made the field in 1973, 1974, 1980, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. The Commodores best showing ever was in 2004 when they swept the Charlottsville, Va. regional as a No. 2 seed and advanced to the Austin, Texas Super Regional where they were beaten handily in two games against Texas.

NCAA regional play starts on Friday.
