BALTIMORE - Two weeks later, trainer Bob Baffert still is in shock that he lost the Kentucky Derby when Mine That Bird ran down his horse, Pioneerof the Nile, and zoomed off to win by more than six lengths.

"At the quarter pole, my jockey (Garret Gomez) was sitting chill, Pioneer was loaded and I couldn't see anything coming," said Baffert. "I thought it was mine."
At the eighth pole, as Baffert mentally was composing his victory speech, his wife, Jill, yelled, "Something's coming up the rail."
"Who is it?" Baffert cried.


Pause. Then, suddenly, "It's that freaking Calvin Borel," Jill screamed.
And so it was, with Borel riding the hair off Mine That Bird.
Baffert still can't quite believe he lost. "All of us are still shaking our heads," he said at the barn yesterday. Maybe that's why he has given today's 134th running of the Preakness a new name. He's calling it the "I Want Revenge" race.
It's a play on the Derby favorite, I Want Revenge, who was scratched on the morning of the race, but the sentiment is real with him, and the other Derby trainers coming back to test Mine That Bird today.
"We're all looking for revenge," Baffert said. And he thinks he's got just the horse to do it in Pioneer.
"I like my chances," he said. "Pioneer is a really good horse, he has trained well, he's looking fantastic and he's ready to run another big race. He just glides over this Pimlico track. I like what I see."

Pioneer's problem in the Derby was that Mine That Bird flew by him so fast that Pioneer did not see him and had no time to engage him.
"He likes to run at a target," Baffert said. "I think with Rachel Alexandra coming into the Preakness, she will be another target for him to run at. I just hope the target doesn't run out of sight."
Like everyone else, Baffert thinks Rachel Alexandra is the horse to beat.
"She's extraordinary," he said. "She's very dangerous in here. She has a lot of speed, a beautiful way of moving, she's fluid, she just skips over the ground, a great athlete.
"What is really scary is that Calvin Borel says she's the best horse he has ever ridden and that he's never turned her loose. I just hope Calvin's got a short memory. If he's right, then we're all in trouble.
"But you never know how good they are until they are looked in the eye. She'll probably get that in the Preakness, then we'll know how good she really is."
And like everyone else, Baffert does not know what to make of the sensational Derby winner.

"You have to give that little horse credit," Baffert said of Mine That Bird. "He's a good horse. It takes a good horse to win the Derby. But Calvin's ride was simply brilliant. He got squeezed at the start and since he was riding a 50-1 shot and had nothing to lose, he took him way back, hoping to finish well and get a piece of the pie.
"In the end, he got the whole pie, including my piece. That horse might run right by all of us again in the Preakness."
Mine That Bird's new rider, Mike Smith, who replaces Borel, arrived in town yesterday, still startled that he's riding the Kentucky Derby winner in the Preakness, without riding him in the Derby.
"It's never been done before," Smith said.
Even more bizarre, Mine That Bird was ridden in four of his earlier races in Canada by Canadian jockey Chantal Sutherland, who was Smith's live-in girl friend in California over the winter.
She won three stakes races on Mine That Bird at Woodbine. When Borel bailed out to ride Rachel Alexandra, Chantal hoped to get the call on Mine That Bird for the Preakness. Instead, it went to Smith.
Smith said he was sure Chantal would like to have had the mount. "You'll have to ask her," he said. "She's in Canada and I'm in California. But she's excited I got the mount."
Mike, that's one bet I would not make.
